Your goal gives the learning direction

A clearer boundary. A team that speaks openly. An agreement you can act on. Start with what you want to achieve, then learn how understanding can help you move towards it.

Recognize the moment

What is happening beneath the conversation?

A conversation can feel stuck before either person understands why. Explore three familiar situations—and the questions that can change how you approach them.

“I know what I need to say.
I keep finding a reason not to.”

What are you trying to protect?

The relationship, your reputation, or the possibility of being wrong? Understanding the hesitation gives you something specific to prepare for.

What needs to be said—and what would make it both clear and fair?

The learning approach

Three areas.
One connected practice.

Understanding your own position, communicating it clearly, and exploring another person's perspective are connected skills. Each gives the others a stronger foundation.

01 / UNDERSTAND YOURSELF

Say what you mean.

Recognize the assumptions and habits shaping your choices. Prepare to express what matters with clarity, care, and responsibility.

02 / COMMUNICATE CLEARLY

Make space for honesty.

Explore how listening, feedback, and responses to disagreement affect trust. Develop a more useful way to handle conversations that matter.

03 / UNDERSTAND OTHERS

Negotiate beyond positions.

Clarify interests, prepare options, and explore trade-offs. Turn an apparent agreement into commitments people understand.

How the knowledge becomes useful

Bring a goal.
Learn how to move towards it.

Your goal gives the learning a purpose. Work backwards from the outcome you want to the conversation, decision, or behavior you can influence.

01 · Define

Make the goal specific.

What do you want to be different? Translate “I want more confidence” into a situation you can prepare for: asking for a change, setting a boundary, or raising a concern.

02 · Understand

Find what needs attention.

Explore your assumptions, the other person's interests, and the constraints around the situation. Separate what you know from what you still need to ask.

03 · Apply & reflect

Choose a next move.

Prepare a question, a clearer request, or a different response. Put it into practice, notice what happens, and use that feedback to decide what to do next.

An example: asking for greater responsibility

The goal: take on a larger role. The application: clarify what readiness would look like to your manager, prepare evidence of your contribution, and propose a defined next step. The review: did you leave with clearer criteria, an agreed action, or a better understanding of the obstacle?

The situation and the outcome are yours. The learning helps you prepare, act, and adapt; other people's choices and real-world constraints still matter.

Choose your path

Where would you like to make progress?

Meet Anatolie

The person behind
WhenYouUnderstand.

I'm Anatolie Barba. My work across leadership, sales, business development, consultancy, and people development has shaped the questions at the centre of this work: what are we missing, what needs to be said, and what would help us move forward?

I created WhenYouUnderstand to turn that experience into practical learning—helping people approach important conversations with more clarity and a wider perspective.
